Poem “Don’t you know?” (10/09/22)
My first poem which was inspired by the quote- “falling in love with a god is not a death sentence. The story is only a tragedy if the god loves you back.”
Don’t you know?
Mortal child, don’t you know?
It infects you-
Infects you with hubris,
It takes away your sensibility-
mortals must all have this.
(Don’t you know?
You are now vulnerable to the kiss of death.)
For only humans can understand what it means-
(Sometimes only when they are on their last breath)
(Humanity;
Fragility
Fleeting and mortal.
Sacrifice
Protecting someone because
Once, that had been you-
Weak.)
For only humans can understand what it means-
To be built of atoms and molecules
To have red blood instead of ichor in your veins
To be brilliant and yet fools
Gods will take and take.
They bleed gold, don’t you know?
They don’t understand what is at stake.
They have been selfish all their lives
And they will never let you out of their cage
Death is a kind of taking too, don’t you know?
It’s a secret.
And this one the gods will never know.
